Stem Cells: How Do They Heal Us?

According to many studies, stem cells have the power to potentially fix any human medical condition out there. It can help treat cancers, it can help regenerate tissue, and it can even create complete organs as well (although the latter still needs further testing and research).

Now, you might be asking, how exactly do these little minute cells heal us?

Stem Cells and Their Miraculous Healing Powers

Our bodies are remarkable in the sense that it can heal whatever damage it is done to it. For example, if you scratch or injure yourself, our body has mechanisms in play that will heal the damaged area.

Stem CellsSome of the mechanisms involve the use of stem cells.

These are unspecialized cells that have the power to generate millions of copies of it and it can also turn into specialized cells with a specific function.

So, suppose that you’ve suffered a tissue damage. These stem cells, in the right amounts, can start the healing process almost immediately.

How Long Does a Stem Cell Treatment Take?

That entirely depends on the medical condition that you have and what type of stem cells to use. There are plenty of stem cell types out there, but the one that is predominantly used are the somatic or adult stem cells.

These cells can be acquired directly from our bodies. For instance, if you suffer from Leukemia, you will be given a high dosage of cancer-eliminating medicines and sometimes you are doused with some radiation to help with it as well.

Prior to those procedures, your bone marrow will be harvested for its stem cells. After the chemotherapy, the extracted cells will be transplanted back into your body to begin the healing process.

It really doesn’t take that long. The entire process of extraction and transplantation roughly lasts for a maximum of 4 hours (collectively).

How Long Will I Expect to See the Results?

That actually depends on the condition that you have. For example, if you’re having knee problems and your doctor told you to get a knee replacement surgery, stem cells can actually help you with that.

Usually, what happens to people who are required to undergo a knee surgery has their cartilage thinned out probably due to overuse or due to a genetic predisposition.

Stem CellsIn this case, the stem cells can work in as little as 14 days after the procedure is done. However, it is important to note that the severity of the condition coupled with your body’s initial response to it might make it faster or it will take longer for the effects to be felt. Rest assured that it is doing its job, but you might need to wait a little longer if the initial effects haven’t kicked in yet.

Stem cells have the potential to heal us. It can be acquired directly from our bodies and it is then transplanted back into our system to initiate the healing process. It can proliferate into many different cells which is why it is best used in regenerative medicine.
